Kelcy Warren, executive chairman of Energy Transfer, made a bold declaration at the Hart Energy LIVE event in December 2023: the notion of transitioning away from fossil fuels is not just unlikely, it is, in his words, impossible. Warren, who was honored as part of the Hart Energy Hall of Fame class, used the occasion to reflect on the state of the industry and share pointed advice for the next generation of energy professionals.
Speaking directly to young people who might be weighing their futures in the sector, Kelcy Warren was unequivocal. “I would say don’t believe any of this nonsense that we’re transitioning out of energy,” he said. “We’re not. That can’t happen, it’s impossible, but we are never going to run from the rhetoric. So I would say for young people, don’t buy off on that. You’re too smart.”
A Career Built on Natural Gas
Warren’s conviction stems from more than four decades spent building one of the most expansive midstream energy companies in the United States. He co-founded Energy Transfer, which today operates more than 90,000 miles of pipelines across 38 states and Canada. The company’s assets span natural gas gathering, processing, transportation, crude oil, refined products, and natural gas liquids. Under Warren’s guidance, Energy Transfer also expanded its portfolio to include Sunoco LP.
The Hart Energy Hall of Fame honor recognized Warren as an architect of pipeline infrastructure that has become foundational to domestic energy supply chains. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Warren expressed genuine appreciation for the other inductees recognized alongside him at the ceremony, describing the experience as humbling.
For Kelcy Warren, the debate over energy transition is not merely a policy disagreement but a question of physical and economic reality. His comments at the Hart Energy LIVE event underscored a belief that natural gas and oil pipelines will remain central to American energy for the foreseeable future, regardless of political headwinds.
