Tajuna Sharpe is the President of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), a public benefit corporation that manages and operates the island of Roosevelt Island in New York City. She is responsible for providing a variety of public services and amenities to the island’s residents, visitors, and businesses. Sharpe is also a passionate advocate for Roosevelt Island’s unique history and culture, as well as its role in the larger New York City community.
Sharpe is a native New Yorker who grew up in Queens and attended the University of Rochester. She had a long and successful career in finance and banking before taking on the role of President at RIOC in July 2020. Since taking office, Sharpe has made it her mission to bring a sense of energy and enthusiasm to Roosevelt Island. She believes strongly in the importance of collaboration and has worked to bring together stakeholders from all sectors of the island’s community.
Under Sharpe’s leadership, RIOC has been able to launch a number of important initiatives that have improved life on the island. In 2021, RIOC opened Southpoint Park, a new waterfront park that was the result of a partnership between the City of New York and RIOC. Southpoint Park includes a variety of amenities such as bike paths, walking trails, and a playground. In addition, RIOC has also launched an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to provide assistance to employees in times of need.
Sharpe is also passionate about preserving the island’s unique history. She has worked with the city to open the historic Smallpox Hospital, which was built in the late 1800s and is now a museum and national landmark. She also recently launched a history tour of the island, which showcases the island’s rich history and culture.
Sharpe has also been a vocal advocate for the preservation of Roosevelt Island’s natural beauty. She has worked with the city to create a plan to protect and preserve the island’s wetlands and open spaces. She is also an advocate for the island’s wildlife, including its iconic swans, which are a symbol of the island’s beauty.
