Randy Douthit’s Dominance on the Big Screen

Randy DouthitAs the credits roll out, concluding an episode of Amazon Freevee’s special, Judy Justice, you will notice Randy Douthit’s name among the first ones on the list. This is because he is both the executive producer and director of the award-winning show.

Before taking on Judy Justice, which is now in its second season, Douthit held a similar position on the spectacular show Judge Judy. Throughout his time directing Judge Judy, he led it to become the number-one show in first-run syndication for twelve straight seasons. However, the Emmy® Award-winning show ended its 25-year run in September 2021.

Douthit has a lengthy history in television, having previously developed and served as executive producer for CNN’s Larry King Live and Crossfire, two popular primetime programs. Another heavyweight show under his belt is NBC’s “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” During the show’s production, he served as an executive producer and executive vice president of television for Warner Bros. Television and Quincy Jones Entertainment, respectively. At one point, Quincy Jones called Douthit one of the most innovative and dynamic producers he had ever worked with.

Douthit established himself as a television industry trendsetter early in his career by turning around a struggling local TV show, Seattle Today, and increasing its viewership from a dismal 5% to a record-breaking 65%. Later in his career, he rose to fame when Ted Turner hired him for a number of high-profile positions at the then-emerging CNN. Douthit spent eleven years at the network and was responsible for creating, executive producing and directing three of its highest-rated programs: Larry King Live, Crossfire, and Capital Gang. He also oversaw the production of CNN specials, including interviews with Presidents Bush, Reagan, Carter, and Nixon.

Randy DouthitAmong the biggest challenges Randy Douthit faced was producing 120 episodes of Judge Judy within three months during the pandemic. Such a task would prove difficult for anybody, even an experienced producer like Douthit. Regardless, they still made things work and completed the task successfully.

Douthit’s exploits on the big screen have landed him numerous awards, including two Peabody Awards, six Cable Ace Awards, and four Emmys. Given his track record, it’s safe to say that he is well-deserving of his awards.
